With a deep rooted passion for finding beauty in all things, I look forward to working with you. On here, I share my work as a interior and home-design brand photographer, but also glimpses into life at The Cottage.
Outdoor season is upon us! YAY! What a great way to celebrate by doing a simple porch makeover for Spring! I’ve teamed up with a local plant nursery, Fairview Garden Center, to show you a carefully, curated selection of plants and flowers. I will show you how to freshen up your porch so it will be simply beautiful all season long!
A couple of weeks ago I met up with Jody at the garden center. It was such a great experience and she was so helpful and knowledgeable. She helped me picked plants and flowers that would work well with our shaded porch and have similar watering needs. Our front porch is fully shaded, however, it gets bright “indirect light” in the morning to mid-day, but full shade as the sun sets. As a result, all of our selections had to be able to grow in part to full shade.
It is so crucial to know your sunlight when picking out plants or flowers. This is one of the easiest ways to ensure growing success!
For our shady porch, we selected: Fatshedera, Citronelle Heuchera, Miss Muffet Caladium, Begonia, Coral Rose Impatien (x2), Purple Bacopa, and Silver Falls Dicondra (x2).
Feel free to save and use this handy plant graphic as a reference guide when you’re out plant shopping!
This is my exact list of plants! 🙂
We placed special attention on where the plants would go once in the ceramic planter. We placed the Fatshedera (tallest) at the back, Heuchera, and Caladium on each side. Then positioned colorful plants in the middle (Impatiens and Begonia). Lastly, the trailing plants at the front so that they can spill down the front of each planter.
For ease of watering — I will focus my watering on the perimeter of each pot. As a result, the water will then absorb to the middle plants that don’t need as much water. We also achieved the classic planter recipe which is: “Thriller, Filler, and Spiller.”
In addition to all the amazing plants and flowers that Fairview Garden Center, they also have a wonderful shop full of curated home décor finds and the perfect accessories to complete your simple porch makeover! 🙂 I snagged this beautiful green wreath that will last all summer long. Then I found this adorable dragonfly pillow! My copper lanterns are still a mainstay on our porch from last year! I’ve linked my wreath ribbon, similar pots, and rugs so you can create the same look!
I absolutely love taking up close pictures of plants and flowers. They are each unique and beautiful to see grow throughout the season.
I love the beauty of each season here at The Gray Cottage. Spring is one of my most favorite as the weather is still cool and all the plants are so colorful!
