Spring at The Gray Cottage
Happy Spring to you all. I can’t wait to share some of the gorgeous spring views at The Gray Cottage with you. It’s been quite a few months since I’ve shared anything on the blog! WHOOPS! I have a new project in the works and it may or may not involve a new website. 😉
We’ve been doing a lot of work around our house which has been keeping us very busy on the weekends. It is mostly in the backyard and I will show off that hard work later! The weather has been warming up in North Carolina and I have loved seeing the new growth on our landscaping we completed last fall. I love Aubrey Heburn’s quote “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” The sun and fresh air does wonders for our soul – get outside y’all!
As I mentioned, we installed the front landscaping OURSELVES last fall. We started on the border wall in July – don’t recommend doing that in 95 degree heat and humidity. Learn from us — save those projects for the fall and spring. We installed the plants at the first of September so they could get established before winter. It has been so fun to see their fresh leaves and blooms peeking out this spring.
Coming down the front walk, we have two gardenia plants that have been there for 4 years now. They smell amazing during the summer heat as you walk up the front porch steps. I will need to divide the Heuchera plants this fall. They have very tall stalk-like blooms in the early summer – definitely recommend. The copper lanterns have been a great addition to our gray stonework. They stay out year round.

Did you purchase your plans for this home. I love the exterior components, the style, the choice of sidings and stone…..looking for plans with a first floor master suite option

We custom designed our home with a local architect. 🙂 Our master is on the first floor and has its own roofline. It is a vaulted 16ft ceiling. 🙂

I love your house! I am building a house and have chosen board and batten and the gauntlet grey color you have. Our contractor keeps telling us the board and batten will warp or bubble with our dark exterior color. Have you had any problems with this?

That’s wonderful – congrats! We used hardiplank for the siding, board and batten, etc….we have had ZERO issues with warping or bubbling. We used Sherwin Williams paint so make sure to use quality paint for the exterior as well!

Could you help me pick out a paint color for a craftsman / farmhouse style it’s a new build so having picked the shingles yet would love to do a white with stone an wood colored beams ,Thank Patty

Is the railing on the porch area custom made or purchased from a supplier? If a supplier, do you know what brand? I know what I want but our normal supplier doesnt get my vision 🙂

It is custom, built on-site by our builder. Just normal 1×4’s turned to face out! 🙂

I’m so inspired by your color choice. It’s beautiful! Our number one choice for our exterior is gauntlet gray with snowbound trim! Quick question: is your gauntlet get diluted at all or is it as is?
